Teun Voeten is an award winning war photographer and author based in New York and Brussels. Originally, he studied cultural anthropology and philosophy at Leiden University. Over the last 25 years, he covered conflicts world wide for publications such as Vanity Fair and Newsweek and organizations as the UNHCR and ICRC. He made books on the underground homeless in New York, the war in Sierra Leone and the drug violence in Mexico.

Voeten also organizes exhibitions, gives workshops and is a regular lecturer at prestigious academic institutions. He started making video documentaries as well. September 2018, he obtained his PhD degree with a dissertation on the Mexican Drug Violence. Currently Voeten works on a research project called ‘Global Trends in Drug-induced Disintegration’, both as a researcher and photographer.

PhD thesis: Dr Voeten!

After 5 years of hard work, I finished my PhD thesis called ‘The Mexican Drug Violence Hybrid Warfare, Predatory Capitalism and the Logic of Cruelty’. The defense was September 20th 2018 at Leiden University.

A gang of smart professors launched for 45 minutes a relentless attack with critical questions that I managed to counter successfully!

So from now on, it is Dr Voeten. But you can still call me Teun...

As an independent PhD candidate, I financed my research myself and never received grants, subsidies or government support. Same for my war photography projects. It can be difficult, but I love to be independent.

Currently, I am working on a rather ambitious international project called ‘Global Trends in Drug-induced Disintegration’ which will take me to no-go zones in Mexico, crime ridden failed state Honduras, gang controlled territories in Brazil and the slums of European cities.

After a short stint studying biology, Teun Voeten started to study Cultural Anthropology, minor philosophy, at Leiden University. September 2018, he will defend his PhD thesis on the Mexican Drug Violence at his Alma Mater.
